About the Study
Complete Streets are designed to ensure the safe and adequate accommodation of all users of the transportation system, including pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation users, children, older adults, individuals with disabilities, motorists, and freight vehicles.
The study area for the New Brunswick Complete Streets Implementation Plan encompasses the heart of New Brunswick, including the New Brunswick Train Station and its connections to the downtown and Esparanza neighborhoods. This study will look at how streets, sidewalks, intersections, transit connections, lighting, wayfinding, and other features work today and identify opportunities to improve safety, accessibility, and overall mobility for all users.
The plan will focus on projects that can be implemented over time and that may be eligible for state, regional, or federal funding.
What We’re Studying
The initial part of this study will involve learning and understanding how people move around downtown New Brunswick and evaluating:
Sidewalks and pedestrian accessibility
Bicycle facilities and connections
Transit access and connections
Street and intersection safety
Traffic and roadway operations
Parking and curb activity
Lighting and wayfinding
Connections to neighborhoods and key destinations
Environmental conditions, including drainage and heat
What could Complete Streets look like?
The plan will identify priority streets, intersections, and connections where improvements can make the greatest difference, such as:
-

SAFER CROSSINGS
Make it safer and easier to cross the street with features such as marked crosswalks, pedestrian signals, curb ramps, and better visibility.
-

BETTER TRANSIT CONNECTIONS
Make it easier to walk or bike to the train station and bus stops, and connect transit with neighborhoods, downtown, and other destinations.
-

BETTER SIDEWALKS
Make sidewalks safer, more accessible, and easier to walk along, with better connections between neighborhoods, businesses, transit, and other destinations.
-

LIGHTING AND WAYFINDING
Add or improve street lighting, signs, and other features that help people feel comfortable and find their way around the city.
-

BICYCLE CONNECTIONS
Create safer and more connected routes for people riding bikes, with connections to neighborhoods, downtown, the train station, and other destinations.
-

STREET DESIGN
Look at how streets are designed and used, including travel lanes, parking, crossings, sidewalks, bike facilities, and other features, to make streets work better for everyone.
The plan will use maps, street sections, and concept drawings to illustrate a safer, more sustainable New Brunswick.
